The Bespoke Approach
Every Sherwood commission begins with a conversation.
The design evolves through dialogue, refinement and craft until the piece feels unmistakably yours.

“When I’m working at the bench, everything else disappears.
There’s only the metal, the tools, and the quiet process of bringing an idea into form.”
The Making Process

Step 1: Inspiration & Initial Thoughts
Every bespoke project begins with inspiration. Clients are encouraged to gather images, references, textures or colours that resonate with them.
At this stage we also consider practical details such as:
-
gemstone preferences
-
metal choices
-
ring sizes or measurements
-
overall design direction
-
and the intended budget for the piece
These early references help establish the visual language and intention of the jewel.

Step 2: Consultation
We then meet for a consultation to explore the piece in more depth.
This conversation allows us to understand:
-
the story or occasion behind the commission
-
the style and proportions that suit the wearer
-
practical considerations such as lifestyle and wearability
Consultations can take place in person at the studio or remotely if required.
Step 3: Design Development
Following the consultation, initial design concepts are developed.
Depending on the project this may include:
-
hand-drawn sketches
-
digital 2D renderings
-
or fully realised 3D design concepts
These visuals allow the client to see the proportions, structure and overall character of the piece before moving forward.
Model Creation
Once the design direction is approved, a detailed 3D model of the piece is created. This allows the client to see and often try on the design at its intended scale and proportions. Any final adjustments can be made at this stage to ensure the piece feels exactly right before production begins.

Step 4: Gemstone Selection
With the form of the piece established, we move on to selecting the gemstones.
A range of carefully sourced stones are presented, allowing the client to compare colour, cut, brilliance and character. Together we select stones that complement both the design and the story behind the commission.
This stage is often the most enjoyable part of the process.
Step 5: Craftmanship & Production
The final stage is the making of the piece in the workshop.
Using traditional goldsmithing techniques alongside modern precision technology, the jewel is carefully crafted, set and finished by hand.
Once complete, the piece is presented ready to be worn and lived with for many years to come.

A bespoke piece of jewellery is not simply made, it is developed through dialogue, intention & time.
